The Products
I have sensitive skin. Is this for me?
We built this range for sensitive skin. We don’t disturb barrier function with surfactants. We use mild preservatives and a single fragrance molecule at very low percentage to minimize the chances of sensitization.
What are the Lipids products and why should I use it?
Lipids are a broad group of compounds containing fats, waxes, and oils. Your skin produces lipids for some very important reasons, such as keeping your barrier function good and feeding a healthy microbiome. Supplementing your sebum with the nutritive and complex fatty acids in the Lipids products allows your skin to retain water more effectively and to feed a group of microbes that will benefit your skin.
This superior moisturizing system that you refer to, what is it and why did you do that?
The moisturising system we use is the combination of a Lipids product and a Serum. A traditional moisturiser contains both oil-based and water-based ingredients. We kept the oil and aqueous ingredients separate because it allowed us to avoid the use of emulsifiers and it also allows the client to tailor the amount of oil in their ‘moisturiser’.
Why don’t you have a cleanser?
Human beings have been washing themselves with cool, natural water for millions of years. About a hundred years ago, multinational companies managed to do a good enough job at advertising to make the average person believe that they needed foamy soap to be clean. We disagree. You are not inherently dirty. Don’t buy into the ad campaigns. Soap does damage to skin and to the environment. Large companies making money is not something we’d consider to be worth this damage.
Our skin can be cleaned well enough with cool or lukewarm water. You don’t need a cleanser, so we won’t sell you one. You should only use the Make-up Remover if you have make-up or sunscreen to remove.
Why don’t you have a moisturizer?
We understand that you’re probably used to a moisturizer. We’ve broken the moisturizer into two parts … a Lipid phase and a Serum phase. This allows you to tailor the product to your skin’s needs. Add more oil if your skin is lipid dry and more serum if it is dehydrated.
This format also means that we can exclude the emulsifiers that would normally disrupt your skin’s natural microbiome.
Are your products for men or women?
We make products for Homo sapiens sapiens. Hence the brand’s name.
We don’t differentiate between genders or race groups.
There are differences between male and female skin. Male skin is hairier and, on average, slightly more oily. There are also differences in the skin of different race groups. These differences are, on the whole, minor and don’t warrant the design of segregated product lines.
What is the difference between the Sensitive and Anti-Ageing (PRIME) range?
The products in the Sensitive line are well-suited to those who wish to minimise the negative impacts of modern life on skin but aren’t experiencing signs of ageing to a great degree. The products in the Anti-Ageing line offer higher levels of anti-ageing actives. The Anti-Ageing products are still suitable for sensitive skin but are more targeted at dealing with ageing signs.
When do I use the two PRIME products?
When you’re older than 35.
Can I mix your products with products from other brands?
You could, but we don’t think this is a winning strategy if you want to maximise your value for money. If you, for example, use the Probiotic Mist to apply live bacteria to your face and then follow it up with a moisturiser from another brand, containing petrochemicals and parabens, you’ll simply kill all the beneficial microbes you just applied. We think you could benefit more by sticking to a single skincare philosophy at a time.
You say to only wear cosmetics as needed. Can I still wear sunscreen daily?
You can if you want, but we think it’s enough to use sunscreen when you’re going to be spending enough time in the sun that burning is a risk. The type of sunscreen is also worth thinking about. We’d strongly recommend avoiding chemical sunscreens and using mineral ones instead.
Do I need to add any other serums or treatments to my routine or are these products sufficient?
You don’t need to add any other serums. These products are sufficient. Your skin is less dependent upon cosmetics than you’ve been led to believe!
Can I add an eye cream?
You can if you’d like, but we’d suggest that you exercise caution with your choice. We wouldn’t advise that you apply an eye cream containing harsh preservatives or other synthetic components.
My skin feels too oily when I use the lipids and serum – what do I do?
The Lipids and Serum combination is useful because it can be tailored to your level of oiliness. If your skin feels oily after you have applied your mixture, you can simply add less oil.
My skin feels too dry when I use the lipids and serum – what do I do?
The Lipids and Serum combination is useful because it can be tailored to your level of oiliness. If your skin feels dry after you have applied your mixture, you can simply add more oil.
The Probiotic Boost is hellish expensive, do I have to use it?
No, you don’t have to use it. The live probiotics in the Probiotic Boost are carefully selected for their ability to improve skin’s barrier function, calm the immune system, and bring balance to the skin microbiome.
WTF. Why is your Sapienic Oil so expensive?
We’re sorry. Well … a little bit sorry.
We extract the Sapienic Acid from the seeds of a vine that is indigenous to Tanzania. The seeds are small, and the yield is only around 6%, so it is costly to produce. The seed pods also explode and throw the seeds about 15m away, which is very irritating.
The only other source of natural Sapienic Acid is humans and we’re not keen to bathe people in solvents to extract it. Unless you’re offering?
What will sapienic acid do for me?
Our Sapienic Boost will improve skin firmness by an average of 12% in 28 days and it will boost skin hydration by around 30% (average 20 humans).
We know that it has the ability to shift the skin microbiome – it is selectively toxic to Staphylococcus aureus and can be used as a nutrient by key microbes on your skin – so we are hoping that it will normalize skin that is dysbiotic (disturbed microbial ecosystem).
Do I need to keep your probiotics in the fridge?
No. We’ve done our homework and they are stable for 18 months at 30˚C / 86˚F. Some of the strains are inherently stable as spores and we have encapsulated the others to keep them viable.
Your products don’t have fragrance ingredients. Do they smell bad?
We minimize our use of fragrance ingredients because they are a common cause of skin sensitivity. The products have a very faint vanilla smell from the 0,01% natural vanillin that we add.
Why don’t you use essential oils?
Essential oils are a complex mix of many compounds. Any one of these compounds can trigger an allergic response on skin. We work hard to minimize the total number of potentially sensitizing compounds in our products.
Do your products contain palm oil?
We don’t use palm oil but some of the products contain ingredients that are made using either coconut or palm oil. Generally, coconut is used. We ensure that when palm oil is used that it is RSPO certified. This is also audited independently by Ecocert to the COSMOS standards.
